How long does it take to process an ACH refund?
My agent said they refunded my ACH payment, what is the typical timeline for an ACH refund? When should I see the funds refunded to my bank account?
Typical ACH Refund Timeframe- Shopper Receiving an ACH Refund
Most ACH refunds take 5–7 business days to complete, but timing can vary depending on when the refund is initiated and your bank’s posting schedule.
How the Process Works
- Merchant initiates refund (1–3 business days):
Once the merchant submits the refund, it’s sent through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network. - Bank-to-bank transfer (1–2 business days):
The ACH network processes the refund and sends it to your receiving bank. - Funds posted to your account (1–2 business days):
Your bank applies the credit to your account once the refund clears.
In total, this process typically takes about 5–7 business days, though some banks may take longer to post funds.
Factors That May Affect Processing Time
- Weekends and holidays: ACH transactions only process on business days.
- Bank policies: Each bank has its own posting schedule for incoming ACH credits.
- Refund initiation timing: Refunds started late in the day may not enter the ACH network until the next business day.
When to Follow Up
If it has been more than 7 business days since the refund was initiated, you can:
- Confirm with the merchant that the refund was processed.
- Ask for the ACH trace number or return reference number.
- Provide that number to your bank so they can locate the incoming refund.
