This article explains the credit card refund process and what your shoppers can expect

Processing Timeline

Once you submit a credit card refund, it generally appears on the customer’s credit card account within 5–10 business days.

Typical breakdown:

  • 1–3 business days: Refund submission and initial processing by your payment processor.
  • 3–7 business days: Processing by the card network and the customer’s issuing bank.

Note: Weekends and bank holidays do not count as business days.

Best Practices

  • Communicate clearly:
Let customers/ shopper know the date the refund was submitted and the expected 5–10 business day timeframe.

  • Provide proof:
Share a confirmation email, receipt, or transaction/refund ID so the customer’s bank can trace the refund if needed.

  • Avoid duplicate refunds:
If a chargeback or dispute is already in progress, wait for it to be resolved before issuing a separate manual refund.

Suggested Response to Customer/ Shopper Inquiries:

Once your refund is processed, it typically takes 5–10 business days for your bank to post it to your account. The exact timing depends on your card issuer’s policies.
